Area youths were treated to a karate exhibition by Sensei Lucas Wright yesterday at the Watseka Public Library.

Wright, a martial arts instructor in Watseka, took a few students to demonstrate and explain the art of karate, and answer some questions. With him were Kattie Killion, 17, of Milford, Haley Shuper, 10, Allyssa Sorenson, 6, and Ashtyn Sorenson, 10, all of Watseka.

Wright explained several things to the audience as the group of students performed tasks like katas and sparring.

One child in the audience asked about ninjas. "Don't believe most you've heard. A ninja is just an assassin," Wright said.

"Most of all martial arts weapons originated as farm tools, " he said.

One tool in the demonstration was a kama. This tool is used on a farm to harvest wheat and rice, but has become a martial arts tool as well.

The youngest student in the demonstration was Allyssa Sorenson. Just 6, she was third in her division competing against eight other groups with students who were 14 years old.

Wright has been training since 1991. He is trained in shuri ryu karate do, shudo kan karate do, muai thai, jeet kune do, as well as others. He currently has the highest black belt rank under Grand Master Ron Reed. Wright is also president of The Abduction Prevention Team, (TAPT) and a certified defense tactics instructor through Force Options for police and military. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
