BISHOP Fox's School student Jake Chapman is setting his sights on the 2012 London Olympics after winning gold at the World Karate Traditional Association World Championships in Viareggro, Italy.Three years ago the County Gazette reported on Ruishton Primary School pupil Jake, aged ten, who had just returned from an international event in Ireland with a bronze medal. And, since then, the young karate star has continued to achieve success.
The 13-year-old travelled to Italy as a member of the England squad and, after three days of qualifying, earned a place in two finals. The team Kata final required all three members to perform a set of karate moves in unison and is scored by four judges. After a hard-fought contest, England claimed a silver medal.
But, better was to come in the team Kimite event where all three members fight one of the opposing team.

The fights consist of two-minute rounds and the first fighter to six points is declared the winner. Jake and his team mates Mathew Broadhead and Adam Pointon all won their fights to win gold which they were presented with at the closing ceremony.
Jake trains twice a week in Bath and Weston-super-Mare and spends most weekends training or competing in national and international events under the instruction of Clayton Murrian, a seventh Dan who is a specialist in the Wado Ryo style karate.
Jake now hopes karate will be included in the London 2012 Olympics when the County Gazette could be reporting on an even more prestigious title!
