South West Karate success

MARTIAL arts enthusiasts flocked to Portishead for the first South West Open Karate Championships.The event, at the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, was organised by the Bristol based Imperial Karate Club and saw competitors from all over the UK and Ireland go head to head in the contest.
Chelsie Ware, aged 11, from Clevedon Karate Club, winner of the girls' 10 to 11 years Kumuite.
Around 450 people entered, bringing along with them 250 spectators which spent the day watching entrants compete in 28 different categories of the sport.
The competition was followed by the showcase finals which reached an exciting climax with a break dancing display by Cardiff based group Up Rock Addicts.
The day concluded with the presentation of trophies by Karate England former vice chairman Peter Allen.
Imperial Karate Club spokesman Simon O'Brien said: "The championships were a resounding success and proved that the South West can hold a prestigious event at national level and will now become a yearly event on the national calendar.
"The South West Open 2007 will see us move to a bigger local arena with more competition areas and will continue in its aim to highlight and develop athletes in the newly recognised Olympic sport of karate.
